Yellow Dog Project

The Yellow Dog Project is a global movement for owners of dogs that need space. It hopes to educate the public and dog owners to identify dogs needing space, promote appropriate contact of dogs and assist dog parents to identify their dog as needing space.

Yellow Dogs are dogs who need space - they are not necessarily aggressive dogs but more often are dogs who have issues of fear; pain from recent surgery; are a rescue or shelter dog who has not yet had sufficient training or mastered obedience; are in training for work or service; are in service; or other reasons specific to the dog. Here’s a list of what a yellow dog is NOT.

The Yellow Dog Project seeks to educate appropriate ways to approach or make contact with a dog with permission of a dog owner only, whether or not a dog is a “yellow dog”. They also seek to promote the use of yellow ribbons to identify yellow dogs needing extra space.

As a not for profit organization, all of the monies raised/donated are used to buy more material for ribbons, t-shirts for representatives, and posters for display.

Dogs are People Too

For the past two years, my colleagues and I have been training dogs to go in an M.R.I. scanner — completely awake and unrestrained. Our goal has been to determine how dogs’ brains work and, even more important, what they think of us humans.
Now, after training and scanning a dozen dogs, my one inescapable conclusion is this: dogs are people, too.

Because dogs can’t speak, scientists have relied on behavioral observations to infer what dogs are thinking. It is a tricky business. You can’t ask a dog why he does something. And you certainly can’t ask him how he feels. The prospect of ferreting out animal emotions scares many scientists. After all, animal research is big business. It has been easy to sidestep the difficult questions about animal sentience and emotions because they have been unanswerable.

Until now.

Stolen Pets :: Your Questions Answered

Article via CSI, courtesy of SPCA Uitenhage ::

If your dog has been stolen, this is a police matter and you will need to contact your local SAP Branch to open a case and to seek assistance. Please note that the SPCA cannot assist with the actual recovery of your dogs other than by networking on Facebook.  The SPCA is NOT a government organization and we have NO rights to enter someones home or garden without their permission.

Invariably if your pet (usually an unsterilized male or female dog) is stolen, it is for nefarious purposes, ie: to be used as a breeding machine in a puppy mill or as a bait dog in dog fights or as a bait dog itself. All three activities are in direction contravention to what we stand for.

We attend to reports of abuse and neglect on a daily basis and this is our job and we do it because we care deeply for the welfare of ALL animals.
As a member of the public we urge you to report matters of neglect and abuse to us whenever you witness something and if you know the whereabouts of a stolen dog to report it to the police.

As a responsible pet owner please ensure that:
a) your pet is sterilized,
b) your pet is microchipped (cost +-R180 from your local vet),
c) your pet has a name tag and collar with their name and your phone number on it and
d) that your garden is secure and that all gates are closed so that your dog cannot easily get out and go walkabout in the street and if possible not visible from street and no access from neighbouring walls.

Let's work together to keep our beloved pets safe!"

Ralph Lauren Presents The Dog Walk

Rescue dogs model Ralph Lauren clothes in new campaign

Ralph Lauren model Roxy has silky smooth hair and big brown eyes. She loves apples, frolicking on the beach, and playing a rollicking game of fetch. That’s right, fetch.

Miniature dachshund Roxy is one of 10 rescue dogs who participated in Ralph Lauren’s “The Dog Walk” campaign, a collaboration with the ASPCA that kicked off on Oct. 15. The charming pups were plucked from shelters and featured in a short film, set on city streets, that showcases the company’s Fall 2013 accessories collection. Though the brand has never shied away from including dogs in print ads in the past, this is the first time the company has let rescue dogs take center stage in a fashion show alongside their human model counterparts.

Bring dogs back into the family

People tether their dogs for a variety of reasons; but solutions are available

Passive cruelty. Neglect. Ignorance. These are all terms that can be used to describe the act of leaving
a dog on a rope or chain, or even in a yard alone and isolated, for long periods. Dogs, like humans,
are social animals and require the companionship of their “pack.” Without the benefit of companionship and the socialization it accords, dogs can become neurotic, depressed or aggressive.
“A lot of people don’t know this, and so that’s why education around the issue of tethered dogs is so important,” says Kim Monteith, regional animal welfare supervisor for the BC SPCA. Monteith offers insight into the most common reasons people tether their dogs:

Update :: Dog Fighting Case

A case of dog fighting that occured in May 2011 has finally had a day in court.

In May 2011, police and animal welfare groups raided a smallholding in Ladywood.  The police and SPCA officials made the horrific discovery of two pitbull terriers fighting in a cage in the centre of the living room where another 6 pitbulls were chained waiting to fight.  The welfare workers were horrified at the extent of the injuries of the dogs.  The two dogs were so badly injured that they had to be rushed away for treatment.
Police arrested 10 people and confiscated a substantial amount of restricted veterinary drugs, allegedly used to treat dogs severely injured in fights, or even to put down pitbulls which were unlikely to survive the ordeal.  Upon further investigation it emerged that the drugs were supplied by a government official also arrested at the fight.  In Feb 2012 IOL reported that Ferdinand Endemann had been dismissed as an employee at the Western Cape Agriculture Department, and criminally charges were brought against him.   Billy Marais, a chef at a top local restaurant, and owner of the property, was also amongst those arrested.  He was known to own about 6 American pitbull terriers and claimed that he was rehabilitating these rescues.
An SPCA source, who did not want to be named because he feared for his and his family’s safety, said some of the men arrested were believed to be involved in professionally organised fighting bouts and were key players in the underworld of organised fighting.

Join the KAWS demonstration against dog fighting on Monday 07 October at 10h00

A few months ago a group of people from KAWS and PAWS demonstrated against the light sentence handed down to Billy Marais who had been convicted on a charge of dog fighting in the Plett area. On Monday the court case starts against the other men involved who have pleaded not guilty.

Our demo was featured on the front page of the KP Herald. For those who did not participate in the previous demonstration, we appeal to you to join us on Monday 7 October at 10am outside the Knysna magistrate court. We will be making a number of placards, but please also make your own. Here are some examples that we used in July: "Dog fighting is barbaric" "No to extreme animal cruelty" "No light sentences for these criminals".

Help :: Stolen Pitbulls - PE Area

Please help us find these Pits and return them home to their families.  Mia was found in the township 7 days after going missing.  She was emaciated, abused and had signs of fighting - no dog deserves this kind of treatment!  She was lucky and is back home safe after her terrible ordeal.  Now we need to find and save the others.

Check out the new ADOPTABLES page

For those of you who find the idea of visiting a shelter overwhelming, we now have a brand new page that lists all the shelters across the country that have pets available for adoption.  I've separated them into cats, dogs, and so on, to help you find the perfect pet for you and your family.  Visit the Adoptables page now and remember that these shelters are continuously updating their pages so if you don't find what you're looking for at first, please visit again.  Also, please spread the word; every animal adopted from a shelter saves two lives - the animal being adopted and that of a new animal that can be taken into the shelter.  Awesome.
