What you do for your children

Happy Heritage Day!

Today, South Africans across the spectrum celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.  While you are enjoying time with your families, spare a thought for those lonesome souls who would love nothing more than to be a part of a family.  If you feel like you could make room in your homes and hearts for another family member, please consider looking at your closest rescue shelter first.

Be a hero and adopt, don't shop.

11 Facts about Animal Cruelty

Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations that put greater priority on profits than the health and well-being of the puppies.  Many dogs are plagued with illnesses or infirmaries like kidney or heart disease, as a result of the poor conditions they’re kept in.

Each year, thousands of young and healthy Greyhounds are killed because they lack racing potential or have been injured while racing and are no longer competitive.

Emaciated & Dying Dog’s Amazing Transformation

When Patrick was found, he was emaciated and abandoned. His cruel owner starved him until he was nearly dead, threw him down a garbage chute that was 22 stories high and left him for dead. A maintenance worker found the poor puppy before he was put into the trash compactor, cold and almost dead.
The City of Newark Animal Control was contacted and ACO Arthur Skinner picked up the dog and brought him directly to the Humane Society. This was his amazing transformation:

When Patrick was found, he was so badly emaciated he was thought to be dead.

Fall in Love With the World’s Cutest Pirate Kitten

When Sir Stuffington was found on the street, he already was missing an eye and his face was horribly scarred. His foster mom believed that he suffered a raccoon attack when he was very young. Thankfully, a kind family decided to rescue him… making him the coolest (and cutest) pirate kitten in all of existence.

Even though Sir Stuffington has had a rough life, he has pulled through and beat unbelievable odds.

Civet cat coffee's animal cruelty secrets

Animal cruelty during the production of one of the world's priciest coffees has been exposed by a BBC investigation.  Kopi luwak is made from coffee beans excreted by Indonesian palm civets - small, mongoose-like creatures.

Coffee firms say wild civet cats eat the ripest beans which gain a desirable
flavour  - but as Chris Rogers reports, many are kept in captivity

But undercover reporters in Indonesia witnessed civets held in battery-cage conditions to produce the coffee.  And experts say they are "totally convinced" kopi luwak from caged animals ends up on the London market.  Kopi luwak has surged in popularity, featuring on the Oprah Winfrey Show and in the 2007 film The Bucket List.  Many retailers sell the product as "wild", sourced in the jungle from the droppings of free-roaming animals.

Costa Rica :: Organization Saves Hundreds Of Unique, Mixed-Breed Dogs

The Territorio de Zaguates in Costa Rica is an organisation dedicated to rescuing abandoned dogs;  they shelter, neuter and find loving homes for them.  And much like here in South Africa, they have trouble homing their mixed-breed dogs, as most people prefer purebreds.  Undaunted, they came up with a fantastic way to promote these wonderful, unique dogs.

In a bid to erase the stigma that mixed-breed dogs are less valuable, the shelter invited canine experts to find out the breeds of these dogs.  Considering their breed mix and other unique aspects, they conceived new names for them like "Chubby-tailed German Dobernauzer" and "Bunny-tailed Scottish Sheepterrier".

Pedigree Dogs ad shot 1000 FPS using the Phantom camera

Director Bob Purman used a camera at 1,000 frames per second to capture these scenes of dogs in action for a Pedigree commercial. The result is an opportunity to savor dogs’ expressions in a unique way — really slow.

“The super slow motion really captured this intense sense of desire in the dogs’ eyes,” Purman said to Creative Newsletter, from Advertising Age. “To me it was equal parts awe inspiring and hilarious to see so rich a palate of personality in a dog’s facial expressions.”

Educate :: Esme in Namibia

Those of you who have been following Azzan's story will know Esme.  She saw our plea for help and decided to take it upon herself to drive all the way from Windhoek to Ruacana to find him eventhough she didn't know us and only had a pretty vague photo of Azzan.  If it wasn't for her, we might possibly never have rescued or even seen Azzan again!  Well, this was no once-off and Esme is always actively helping animals in and around Windhoek.

Please Don't Chain Me

Please read and share this very important notice from SPCA Uitenhage.  Please report ANY chained dogs to them, see their contact details after the jump:

Dog Behaviour

Namibia Animal Awareness shared this great bit of advice today from Glasgow Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant.

There have been a number of "cute" pictures circulating recently with dogs and kids. No one is suggesting not letting your dog interact with your kids or vice versa, just please be aware of the signs that your dog is, or may be, uncomfortable. Dog's generally don't like being hugged, some do and some tolerate it, but hugging is a primate behaviour, not a canine one.

An Act of Dog - Mark Barone

Faces of the Doomed: Artist immortalizes 5,500 shelter dogs by painting each of their portraits before they are put down.  Losing a pet is impossibly hard, but if you can channel your loss into something productive, it hurts a little less.

Sita was another pit bull mix. They are some of the most common dogs in shelters.

When painter Mark Barone's dog Santina died three years ago, after 21 years of companionship, he was devastated. But after his partner, Marina Dervan, suggested that they adopt a new dog from a shelter, both of their lives transformed in unexpected ways.

What to do when you find a stray

Five things you should do when you find a stray

I don’t know a single dog owner who hasn’t, at some point (or quite frequently), spent an inordinate amount of time trying to capture a stray or lost dog.  I know I’ve caught more than my share in the small town, or its rural surroundings, where I’ve lived for the past five years. I’ve caught burr-covered, obviously lost hunting dogs; dogs whose injuries suggested they’d tumbled from the back of a truck; as well as some fluffy little lap-escapees who looked like they were just out for an adventure.

If the dog is wearing a collar and tags with current contact information for his owner, you’re in luck – and the rest of the information in this article isn’t relevant. But out of maybe 20 dogs I’ve scooped up in the past five years, exactly one was wearing a collar and current ID tag. It certainly seems like the people who keep collars and tags on their dogs at all times are also the ones who manage to keep them safely contained – but accidents can happen to any owner. Here’s what you should do with an unidentified dog.

Nice To Meet You, Portraits of Abandoned Dogs – Martin Usborne

'Nice To Meet You' is a poignant portrait series of abandoned dogs, shot by London-based photographer Martin Usborne::

Photo :: Martin Usborne
I remember meeting a stranger on a sunny day whilst I was suffering from depression.
'Nice to meet you, how are you?', said the stranger
'I'm fine', I replied.
I wanted to howl.

What happens to those raw, painful parts of ourselves we hide away? The anger, confusion, uncertainty, hope? And what strategies do we use to hide these parts of ourselves? Politeness, arrogance, speed, disinterest?
