Feature :: Animal Outreaches

Mike Kerr from Animal Outreaches in Port Elizabeth is always kind enough to include me in his mails updating us of their hugely successful outreaches in the areas surrounding PE.  They are the voice for all God's furry creatures, great and small, who have been neglected, abused and abandoned, and assist the impoverished community in taking care of their animals.

Mike Kerr was awarded the Eco Angel Award in 2011 which is awarded to an individual whose actions have conserved, nurtured or restored the Earths life forms, eco-systems or natural resources. This award is in recognition for Animal Outreaches participation in the care of animals in the poorest of poor communities and numerous Spayathons in areas such as Missionvale, Joe Slovo, Shamrock, Langboss, Patterson and Valencia.

Support their efforts

If you would like to help Animal Outreaches continue their work for the animals and communities of Port Elizabeth, please consider donating to their worthy cause.

Animal Outreaches is a registered non-profit organisation. They presently have in their care over 200 rescued animals, from cats to horses and everything in between. It is only due to the kindness, care and financial assistance of a handful of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about all animals that these precious creatures, great and small, have sufficient food, water shelter and medical treatment to live a happy life.

About Animal Outreaches:

We adopt a pro-life policy and our desire is to save as many animals as possible as we feel that every animal must be given a chance at a better life. It is only when we are confronted with a "no hope" situation that we resort to euthanasia and we do this with much sadness in our hearts. Our key objective is to prevent cruelty to all animals. Our aim is to improve the lives of those animals that are in dire need of assistance. Our mission is to educate communities in the townships on how to take proper care of animals so that all animals will have a healthy and happy life. Animal Outreaches carry out sterilisation campaigns as and when funds are available to try and combat the puppy and kitten population from reaching epidemic proportions.

Below are some of the projects they have completed so far this year:
Visit their Facebook page to see photos of the lives they have touched and changed.

Aqua Park & Bergsig - 23 April 2013

A very busy day with more and more people bringing their animals in for treatment.  The animals are now looking good and none had to be removed, but still a huge need for sterilisation - far too many pups.

Mission Road - 27 April 2013

As we continue cleaning up the animals in Mission Road, more and more animals are coming in for treatment - word spreads fast in a township.  We have 6 treatment areas now and go out every Saturday.  The animals are looking good and the people are starting to trust us now and are asking if we'll be back next week.

Township Doggy Parlour - 30 April 2013

Just to end the week on a good note; Tuesday was a hard day for the Outreach girls, lots of animals were treated.  This very matted old man was brought to the treatment station - this is why we work in townships, to help the animals that are neglected.

Aqua Park & Bergsig - 30 April 2013

Bergsig and Aqua Park are on the outskirts of Kirkwood in Sundays River valley - they are the two largest townships in the area.  There are lots of little camps and farming villages; the people are so friendly which makes for a very pleasant outreach.  For the next two weeks we will be working in the area and then it's back to the three Addo townships.

Mission Road - 11 May 2013

Mission Road last Saturday was a huge success.  All the animals are looking great, people laughing and joking with the Outreach girls.  We have now started to hand out our contact details as our main concern is the ones that don't come to the treatment areas.

Aqua Park & Bergsig - 14 May 2013

Another successful outreach this week.  The owners are starting to care for their animals now, you can see they are holding them close and that is a big achievement.  Enjoy.

Bergsig & Aqua Park - 11 June 2013

Over the last six weeks, we have been treating the animals in these townships due to a huge outbreak of mange, ticks and fleas.  All the animals are looking good now, so it's time to move over to the Addo area in Sundays River Valley which has two very large townships and a few smaller ones.
Seven animals were removed; one very old Maltese around 16 years, old teeth all rotten and growths all over his body - he will spend the rest of his days with one of the Outreach volunteers (his photo is in the slide show).  A female and her five pups were also removed die to neglect and are now in foster care.

Valencia Township - 18 June 2013

Valencia Township is in Addo and has around 600 animals, the majority in reasonable to good condition.  The people are friendly and very grateful for our help.  We returned to Port Elizabeth with two very old dogs, one blind the other very thin.  They will spend of their lives with Louis.

Mission Road - 22 June 2013

Last Friday we sterilised another 10 dogs from Mission Road; thanks again to the AACL for the use of their clinic.  Another 10 are booked in for next Friday.
Saturday we are back in Mission Road treating and all the other stuff that goes with an outreach.  Animals all looking good and people in good spirits - can't ask for much more.

Bergsig - 25 June 2013

Last Tuesday we were back in Bergsig and Aqua Park.  During the school holidays, all the kids bring out their animals and it gives us the time to teach them what you do and don't do with your dog.

Wieliewaal & Madiba Village - 11 July 2013

One cat removed after it had been attacked by a dog.  Most importantly, the numbers of animals are not increasing.

Valencia Township - 9 July 2013

This is our smallest outreach ever in Valencia - still worth the trip!
