Saturday turned out to be a great day in Cape Town, especially for some very special fur kids at The Lucky Lucy Foundation in Fisantekraal. As volunteers, we were asked to bring some cooked food (boneless chicken, rice and carrots), and brushes for grooming. We spent Friday evening cooking up a storm, and preparing a bag of kitty toys and treats:
We arrived at Lucky Lucy at 09h00 on Saturday morning and once all the cooked food was combined, we got to feed the dogs their special treat.

The wonderful thing about an initiative like this is that the animals get spoilt, they get lots of affection and attention and most importantly, they get socialised.
I'm sure the turn out would have been better had it not been a long weekend, but everyone who did join in seemed to have a lot of fun and were happy to be a part of it. I would've liked to see more kids - it's important that adoptable animals are kid-friendly and it would go a long way to getting them used to the noise and excitement of children.
All in all, it was a lovely day and we left feeling good and happy that we brightened their lives, even if it was just for a little while. You might think you'd feel sad and traumatised after spending a few hours at the farm and having to leave all the animals behind, but the warm feeling of giving of yourself and your time to brighten their lives (even if it is just for a morning) far outweighs that. Knowing that they have a safe haven where they are looked after so well and receive decent meals and proper medical attention when needed is reassuring. At least they have somewhere they can call home and with our help, they will all eventually go to their forever homes.
So support your local shelters and animal organisations by participating, donating and spreading the word that adoption is the key to their success.
