The Territorio de Zaguates in Costa Rica is an organisation dedicated to rescuing abandoned dogs; they shelter, neuter and find loving homes for them. And much like here in South Africa, they have trouble homing their mixed-breed dogs, as most people prefer purebreds. Undaunted, they came up with a fantastic way to promote these wonderful, unique dogs.
In a bid to erase the stigma that mixed-breed dogs are less valuable, the shelter invited canine experts to find out the breeds of these dogs. Considering their breed mix and other unique aspects, they conceived new names for them like "Chubby-tailed German Dobernauzer" and "Bunny-tailed Scottish Sheepterrier".
"They only exist in our country; these are some wonderful specimens", said an authority on pets and breeds, who appeared on a popular Costa-Rican television show to talk about these beautiful canines.
Soon after, the show's Facebook page was bombarded with comments by people who were interested in these one-of-a-kind dogs. People all over the country fell in love with these unique breeds, news about the dogs spread like wildfire over various social media platforms, and adoption rates increased.
What a fun way of promoting these special breeds; I'm sure the many shelters and rescue organisations around South Africa would benefit from such a campaign!
