Life on a dairy farm...

...vs life on a sanctuary

Share :: Battery Hens

Animal Outreaches in PE shared these photos taken from inside a factory, after reading about the horrible conditions discovered by the NSPCA at a Nulaid factory in Rustenburg. The photos are a bit blurred as the camera was hidden.

What you are about to see are unhygienic conditions, dead hens left on top of cages and on the floor, cramped cages – pain and suffering beyond belief.

This is a massive industry that nobody can stop, but the facilities that hold the hens should, at the very least, be monitored and that falls on the NSPCA. The fines should be heavy so that local SPCA can employ more staff to inspect the farming industry, as this is inhumane. No animal or bird should be tortured to death in a cage.

This is the price hens have to pay to put eggs on the shelves of supermarkets. Please Share.

Kids and Dogs :: How Kids Should and Should Not Interact with Dogs

By Dr Sophia Yin

I'd like to share this great article I found on Dr Sophia Yin's blog.  It has valuable information on how you can prevent dog bite incidents by ensuring that your kids are giving your family pet the space and understanding that it needs.  It starts with our kids; let's teach them how:

When a child is bitten by a four-legged family member, it can turn the household upside-down. Owners feel puzzled and confused. “They sleep together all the time,” they might say, or, “He’s always been really good. He even lets Timmy sit on him.” In a majority of cases, the bite seems out of the blue. The humans can’t fathom why their once-trusted companion would bite an innocent child. But anyone who reads “dog” or can see life from the pet’s point of view would most likely say, “I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.”

Donate :: The Winter Blanket Drive

The Winter Blanket Drive started in 2003 and assist shelters with blankets for the abandoned animals through the cold winter months.  Last year they helped over 50 shelters and organisations!
The annual collection is now running until the 16th of May 2014.
Visit their site for a list of those they have helped :: www.blanketdrive.co.za

WBD now not only assist with donating blankets, but also help by donating food, assisting with veterinary bills, sponsor sterilization campaigns and do outreach work.
